Patients suffering from prolonged pain, stiffness, deformity and dysfunction may be candidates for partial or total joint replacement surgery. In joint replacement surgery the damaged or diseased parts of a joint are removed and replaced with a prosthesis (metal, plastic and ceramic parts) to replicate normal joint function. The need for joint replacement surgery is most commonly caused by an injury or an arthritic condition. In some cases, joint replacement surgery might be a patient’s best option to restore function and relieve pain when a joint can not be repaired by any other means.
A patient who has already had a total joint replacement may need to undergo surgery again if the previously replaced joint has failed or worn out. This type of joint surgery is referred to as a revision. Revision surgery is most commonly a need for patients who have had hip or knee replacement surgery and outlived the joint implant. Advancements have been made as the quality of new prosthesis (implants) are more resistant to wear. A replacement joint may last 15 to 20 years with proper care.
