Tendon Injuries

Tendons are tough cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones. The tendons that run through the fingers, hands, wrists and arms connect the muscles of the forearm with the bones of the fingers and thumb. Tendons in the hand are what let you bend and straighten your fingers.

The two most common problems associated with hand and wrist tendons include:

  • Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon and is commonly seen in the wrist and fingers
  • Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the lining of the tendon sheaths that enclose the tendons

Trigger finger, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are common tendon injuries. Tendon injuries are the second most common injuries of the hand. Usual causes of tendon injuries include cuts, animal bites, sports injuries, crushing injuries and rheumatoid arthritis.

An experienced hand surgeon will provide an extensive evaluation of hand, wrist, or elbow tendon injuries and conditions. While X-rays can reveal relevant views of these injuries, an ultrasound or MRI may also be prescribed. Tests such as MRI as well as CT scan show more detail than conventional X-rays and provide a view of other potential injuries in the same location.

A variety of treatments for tendon disorders are available, including painkillers, injections, splinting and surgery if necessary.
