Common Conditions & Types Of Pain

Bursitis – an inflammation of the bursae (small sacs located throughout the body). The most common symptom of bursitis is pain. Common causes of bursitis include injury and overuse. Bursitis can affect your Achilles tendon, buttocks, elbow, hip, knee, shoulder and thigh. The shoulder, elbow and hip are the areas most commonly affected by bursitis. Bursitis is rarely treated with surgery. Most patients will benefit from some combination of rest, physical therapy, medication and possibly a cortisone injection.

Chronic Pain – pain that last at least 12 weeks. Chronic pain can be causes by a variety of conditions and can occur anywhere in the body. Chronic pain typically occurs as the result of an injury. It can also be caused by an underlying health condition. Examples of treatments for chronic pain can include non-prescription and prescription drugs, physical therapy, exercise, acupuncture, massage therapy, nerve stimulation therapy and injections.

Fibromyalgia – the cause of this disorder is unknown. Fibromyalgia is a neurologic health problem that causes widespread pain and tenderness. More common in women. Patients with a rheumatic disease are at higher risk for Fibromyalgia. Pain relievers, anti-depressants and anti-seizure medications might be used to treat fibromyalgia. Physical and Occupational Therapy are also used to help reduce the effect this disorder has on your body.

Headaches – refers to chronic migraines. Patients who suffer chronic migraines or tension headaches for more than 15 days per month. OBotox injections can be used to provide relief for patients who suffer from severe migraines.

Herpes Zoster (Shingles) – symptoms can include itching, fever, headaches, raised dots on the skin and pain. Shingles is cause by the Varicella Poster virus, which also causes Chickenpox. More commonly found in patients over 50. We help patients treat the nerve pain associated with Shingles. Antiviral drugs can help a patient heal faster. Treatment for pain caused by shingles can include a number of medications

Joint Pain – joint pain caused by fibromyalgia, gout, bursitis, osteoarthritis, sprains and tendinitis. Depending on what disorder is causing joint pain, treatments can include medications, topical agents, physical therapy or an injection.

Muscle Pain – Muscle pain is most commonly cause by overuse, minor injuries and stress. Potential causes of muscle pain are numerous. Beside pain, symptoms of a muscle injury can include bruising, swelling, cramping.

Nerve Pain (Pinched Nerve) – direct irritation of damage to a nerve. Examples of conditions that cause nerve pain can include a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or carpal tunnel syndrome. While a pinched nerve can occur anywhere, the most commonly affected areas are the elbows, lower back, shoulders and wrist. Common treatments for nerve pain can include activity modification, rest, medication and physical therapy. Surgery may be an option if a patient is still experiencing pain after a few months to relieve pressure.

Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease) – this is the most common form of arthritis. While osteoarthritis can affect any joint, it’s most commonly found in the hands, hips, knees, lower back and neck. Symptoms such as pain or stiffness build over time. Osteoarthritis is now considered a joint disease, where it was formerly considered a result of wear and tear. Most patients will be able to manage the pain cause by osteoarthritis using some combination of exercise, medication, acupuncture, weight loss, physical therapy, joint injections or the removal of joint fluid. Surgery is an option if conservative treatment methods do not provide sufficient pain relief.

Tendinitis (Tendonitis) – inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Tendinitis can occur in any tendon. Tendinitis is most commonly found around the elbow, heel, knee, shoulder and wrist. The most common symptom is pain. Activity modification, rest, over the counter inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and cortisone injections are all example of treatment that might provide a patient with tendinitis some relief. Surgery for tendinitis is rarely needed and only considered if a patient doesn’t respond to conservative treatments.
